It was common immigrants (at least in the steerage class) to be accosted by unscrupulous agents charging inflated prices for railroad tickets, exorbitant boarding, currency exchange fees, and schemes for employment including the false assertion that service in the U.S. Army was a condition for later citizenship. Many Irish lads were led into army service and these items provide you with a look at how many survived.
