Description
Offered here is a rare three-volume lot from the 1819 Novels and Tales of the Author of Waverley series by Sir Walter Scott. This early collected edition was printed in Edinburgh by James Ballantyne & Co. for Archibald Constable & Co., with London distribution by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown and Hurst, Robinson & Co.
These volumes are uniformly bound and share exceptional Irish provenance, featuring the armorial bookplate of Sir Matthew Barrington, Bart., noted Irish philanthropist and founder of Barrington’s Hospital in Limerick. Each also retains the original Dublin bookseller’s label of T. Connolly, 10 Upper Ormond Quay, reflecting authentic 19th-century Irish book trade history.

Volume 1: Waverley; or, ‘Tis Sixty Years Since, with “Preface to the Third Edition” on the title page, printed by James Ballantyne & Co., Edinburgh, 1819. Includes Sir Matthew Barrington’s bookplate and T. Connolly label. Clean spine with typical age wear.
*
Volume 2: Guy Mannering / Waverley combined on the title page, 1819, a publisher-collected format. Retains both Barrington bookplate and Connolly label. Notable wear to spine: missing a portion of the decorative leather at the bottom, with some chipping and cracking at the top. Boards remain attached with general shelf wear.

Volume 3: Guy Mannering, 1819, with Barrington bookplate and Connolly label. Uniform binding with the set, showing standard 19th-century rubbing and edge wear.
All three volumes feature consistent early 19th-century bindings with spine tooling and titles typical of the period. Pages are age-toned with scattered foxing but remain clear and legible throughout. These books present a matched, historically significant group tied together by proven Irish ownership and bookselling history.
This is a rare opportunity to acquire early collected editions of Sir Walter Scott’s foundational novels with authentic aristocratic Irish provenance, suitable for collectors of Scott, Irish book history, or 19th-century literature.
