Description

Scarce and highly interesting 1857 transatlantic postal-history cover sent from Rothbury, Northumberland, England to Meriden, Connecticut, with multiple postal markings documenting its route through the British and American mail systems.

The cover shows a Rothbury origin postmark dated June 21, 1857, Liverpool transit, New York “BR. PKT.” / “PAID ALL” exchange-office marking, and Meriden, Conn. receiving mark dated July 3. The reverse also bears manuscript notation “Wm Archer / Brooklyn,” adding a named Brooklyn association to the piece.

I have not found another example with this same Rothbury, England to Meriden, Connecticut routing, making this a distinctive pre-Civil War transatlantic cover for collectors of British packet mail, Connecticut postal history, Northumberland postal history, and stampless/treaty-period covers.

Highlights include:

* 1857 England-to-United States transatlantic cover
* Rothbury, Northumberland origin to Meriden, Connecticut destination
* New York “BR. PKT.” and “PAID ALL” postal markings
* Meriden, Conn. receiving mark on reverse
* Manuscript “Wm Archer / Brooklyn” notation
* Uncommon small-town England to Connecticut routing
* Collectible pre-Civil War postal-history item

No adhesive stamp is present; the postal interest is in the paid markings, British-packet routing, and documented transatlantic handling. Condition shows significant age and handling wear, including toning, soiling, creases, edge tears, corner wear, and notable paper loss/damage along the right side. Postal markings remain visible and attractive for study and display. Please view all the photos.
