Description
Offered here is a scarce 1885 Elgin Grade 65 pocket watch movement, serial number 1,797,592. This fine American movement is from an important transitional run where Elgin produced both 8-size and 6-size watches, and this example is confirmed as the larger 8-size version.
This Grade 65 movement features 13 jewels, a Âľ plate gilt finish, a lever setting mechanism, and a hunting configuration, designed for a case with a front cover and the winding stem at 3 o’clock. It was produced during an era when 7-jewel watches were common, making this higher-jeweled model a quality step above standard movements of its day.
The production run for this specific group was limited to just 5,000 pieces, and fewer than 30,000 Grade 65 movements were produced overall, adding to its desirability among collectors. According to historical data, only 22 examples from this specific run have been observed in collector registries, highlighting its scarcity.
The movement is built with a going barrel and quick train, and it incorporates U.S. Patent #77078, reflecting innovations that made Elgin watches more reliable. Notably, this piece was crafted during Elgin’s golden period of watchmaking, when American movements were competing globally for quality and innovation.
A beautiful example of American horological history, perfect for a collection, restoration, or custom display.
Please note: this listing is for the movement only (only what is shown in the photo). The case is not included.
