Offered here is a handsome early 20th-century Oxford University Press edition of Visits to Monasteries in the Levant by the Hon. Robert Curzon, Jr., with an introduction by archaeologist and Arabist D. G. Hogarth. First published in 1849, Curzon’s classic travel narrative chronicles his journeys through monasteries in Egypt, Jerusalem, Mount Athos, and Greece, and his quest for early Christian manuscripts. This 1916 Humphrey Milford/OUP issue preserves the text of the revised Victorian edition in an attractive gilt-decorated cloth binding and includes the important folding plan of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
