Description
This is an authentic first flight airmail cover from November 22, 1927, marking the inauguration of Contract Air Mail Route 9 (CAM-9) between Madison, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. Postmarked in Madison on November 22 and backstamped at Chicago Air Mail Field on November 23 at 9 PM, this flown cover is a genuine piece of early American aviation and postal history.
The cachet reads: First Flight Inaugurating Air Mail Service, with a stylized winged logo and date. It also features a slogan handstamp from Madison – The Four Lake City – Wisconsin. The envelope bears a 10¢ Lindbergh airmail stamp (Scott #C10) and retains vibrant red, white, and blue patriotic stripes.
This flight was part of the U.S. government’s transition to contracting out airmail service following the 1925 Kelly Act. Madison was a key terminal, and this was one of the very first pieces of mail carried under the new system.
The addressee is John C. Morgan of Parnassus, Pennsylvania. The backstamp from Chicago Air Mail Field confirms that the letter was officially flown and received on the next day, lending clear provenance to this cover.
Condition is very good overall with minor wear from handling and age. The postmarks, cachets, and stamp are all clear and attractive.
