Description

Rare limited edition of Soutine by Roger Cognat, published in 1945 by Editions du Chêne in Paris. This is copy No. 122 of only 200 printed, marking it as a scarce postwar art monograph dedicated to v, one of the great Expressionist painters of the early 20th century.

Produced just after the Liberation of Paris, this edition is prized for its early, authoritative text in French and high-quality reproductions of Soutine’s work. Editions du Chêne was known for exceptional art books even during France’s difficult postwar austerity. Limited to 200 numbered copies, these were often reserved for collectors and institutions and printed on superior paper stock.

This example is in softcover with its original vibrant red wraps, which remain strikingly colored for its age. There is wear to the spine with areas where the red covering is missing, and damage to the bottom front right corner. Despite these typical issues, the overall presentation is strong, and the interior is notably clean with minimal foxing. The book retains the fragile, elegant quality characteristic of deluxe mid-century French art publishing.

A rare opportunity to acquire a numbered copy of this historic and highly collectible edition. Please view all the photos to assess condition details.
