Description
A striking crossover of philately and Americana. First Day Cover of Scott #1094 “Old Glory” 4¢, properly postmarked Washington, D.C., July 4, 1957. Custom cachet reads “HISTORICAL WOOD RELIC – INDEPENDENCE HALL – 1776-1957.” The printed statement on the cachet has “Cedar” clearly circled, indicating the attached wood chip is cedar said to be from the bell-tower balustrade removed during 1897 restoration work. At lower right is a small JR-in-circle monogram; the back flap bears a stamped return address “J. R. LOSSON, Sidney, Ohio,” likely the servicer. I have not located another example of this exact cachet, pointing to scarce private production.
