Exceptional circa 1900 pair of original New York City cabinet card portraits from Paley’s Photographic Studio, 141 Division Street, New York. These two photographs were preserved together and feature a man and woman photographed on matching Paley studio mounts against the same distinctive studio backdrop.
The coordinated presentation strongly suggests these were companion portraits, quite possibly of a husband and wife or closely associated couple. Both were photographed nearly full length and dressed in particularly appealing turn-of-the-century fashion.
The woman’s portrait is especially striking, featuring an enormous and highly decorated period hat with flowers, foliage, and upright feathers. Her elaborate dark dress and textured trim create an outstanding example of late Victorian women’s fashion and millinery.
The gentleman is equally well presented in formal urban attire, wearing a derby/bowler hat, long overcoat, waistcoat and tie while holding a walking cane and gloves.
