Description
Original circa-1870s carte-de-visite portrait of a young Swiss soldier, photographed by noted Thun painter and photographer Rudolf Bühlmann. The soldier is shown in a full-length studio pose wearing a double-breasted military tunic, belt and uniform trousers, with his military cap displayed prominently on the studio pedestal and a sidearm visible at his left.
The ornate photographer’s backmark identifies:
* Rud. Bühlmann, painter and photographer
* Thun, Switzerland
* Studio in the Bälliz district near the new military barracks
* Original photographic plate retained for future print orders
The uniform, cap insignia and Thun setting suggest a possible artillery association. Thun was an important Swiss military and artillery center, making this an especially appealing photograph for collectors of European militaria, Swiss history, antique photography and identified photographic studios.
The complete full-length composition, clearly visible uniform details and elaborate Bühlmann advertising backmark give this CDV considerably more historical and display interest than a typical unidentified civilian portrait.
Condition shows expected age-related toning, scattered foxing and surface spotting, with light wear to the mount and rounded corners. The central portrait remains clear and visually engaging, and the decorative reverse imprint is highly legible.
