Description

Original 19th-century etching by Charles-François Daubigny (signed in plate “DAUBIGNY INVáµ— ET SCULPáµ—”), titled “PLAGE DE VILLERVILLE.” This is the classic Gazette des Beaux-Arts edition, printed by Imp. A. Salmon, Paris, generally attributed to c.1874 from Daubigny’s plate (earlier states date to the 1850s). The scene shows Normandy coastal life at low tide-horse carts, figures working the flats, and a small boat offshore-an important subject in Daubigny’s Barbizon/Olympian circle and a touchstone for later Impressionists.
