Description

The Forest Exiles; or, The Perils of a Peruvian Family amid the Wilds of the Amazon, by Captain Mayne Reid. New York: John W. Lovell Company, circa 1889. “A New Edition” with a memoir by R. H. Stoddard and twelve illustrations. This is an attractive late-Victorian juvenile adventure in its original decorative blue cloth, not a modern reprint.

Reid’s story follows a Peruvian patriot and his family, forced into exile and struggling to survive in the Amazon rainforest. Mixing action with detailed descriptions of the plants, animals, and geography of the region, it is a classic nineteenth-century “boys’ novel” and a fine example of period adventure fiction.
