Description

Offered here is a beautiful partial set of Tesoro de Escritores Místicos Españoles, published in Paris in the mid-19th century. This offering includes two matching volumes (Tomo Primero and Tomo Tercero), both bound in period red leather spines with gilt lettering and marbled paper-covered boards, exemplifying the elegant European bookbinding style of the era.

Volume I contains the celebrated Vida de Santa Teresa de Jesús, the classic mystical autobiography of St. Teresa of Ávila, one of the most important texts of Spanish Catholic spirituality. Volume III, dated 1847 on the title page, offers Obras Escogidas-selected writings edited by Don Eugenio de Ochoa, the renowned Spanish literary scholar who curated the series for Baudry’s Librería Europea in Paris.

These volumes were printed by the Imprenta de Creté e Hijo, a prominent Parisian press known for producing high-quality Spanish-language editions for scholars, clergy, and expatriates during this period. The consistent bindings strongly suggest they were ordered as part of a uniform library set in the mid-19th century.

Condition notes: Both volumes show typical signs of age, including rubbing to the leather spines and corners, some edge wear to the marbled boards, and scattered foxing inside. The bindings remain sound and attractive, with gilt titles still legible and marbling retaining good color. These are lovely shelf-worthy examples of Parisian-printed Spanish classics from the 1840s, perfect for collectors of religious history, Spanish literature, or antique bindings.
