Description
Handsome late Victorian Oxford University Press Authorized Version / King James Reference Bible, printed at the University Press and issued through Henry Frowde with London and New York imprint details. Based on the Henry Frowde / Oxford imprint and address style, this copy most likely dates to the late 1880s-1890s.
This is a compact, well-preserved antique Bible with a desirable full leather yapp / divinity circuit binding, where the leather extends protectively beyond the text block. The binding has an attractive dark pebbled leather surface, blind-ruled border decoration, decorative raised/ribbed spine bands, and all edges gilt. The gilt page edges and strong leather presentation make this a much nicer survivor than the worn Victorian Bibles often found today.
Key features include:
* Late Victorian Oxford University Press Authorized Version / King James Bible
* Henry Frowde imprint, likely circa 1880s-1890s
* Compact personal/reference format with side-column cross-references
* Full leather yapp / divinity circuit binding
* All edges gilt
* Traditional dedication to King James present
* Complete Bible text through Revelation
* Faint period pencil shorthand / stenographic notes on the opening flyleaf
The scarcity is in the combination of Oxford/Henry Frowde imprint, compact reference format, full leather yapp binding, all edges gilt, and very attractive intact condition. This is an excellent display, collection, devotional, or gift-quality antique Bible with strong period character.
Condition is very attractive for age, with expected light rubbing, minor edge/corner wear, surface scuffing, and age-toning to the pages. The binding presents very well, and the book is intact. Please view all the photos for condition, contents, and close details.
