Description

A well-known creator of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings in Japan, Kitagawa Utamaro is most known for his bijin okubi-e, or “big headed drawings of lovely women,” from the 1790s. Throughout the middle of the nineteenth century, Utamaro’s work was widely acclaimed in Europe. With his concentration on light and shade and use of partial views, he had a particularly strong influence on the European impressionists. The current book provides a thorough review of his output. I believe the book is from the 1950s. There is some foxing.
