Offered here is an original World War II patriotic cover postmarked Jeannette, Pennsylvania, August 10, 1945, just days before Japan’s surrender in World War II. This historic piece features a scarce illustrated cachet by Leonard Borhorst, depicting General Douglas MacArthur’s march across the Pacific toward Tokyo. The artwork shows MacArthur’s path through the Philippines toward Japan, with a caricatured Japanese figure standing on “Tokyo” island awaiting the inevitable Allied arrival.
The cover bears the 3¢ Iwo Jima commemorative stamp (Scott #929), issued only weeks earlier to honor the Marines’ famous flag-raising at Mount Suribachi. The August 10, 1945 postmark date is historically significant – it falls the day after Japan signaled willingness to surrender following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
