Description
This is a rare and original 1740 engraved portrait of Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford, created by the celebrated Dutch engraver Jacob Houbraken after a painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck. It was engraved in Amsterdam and published at the expense of John and Paul Knapton in London, as part of the landmark historical series The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain.
This particular print bears the original inscription:
“Ant: van Dych. In the collection of St Francis Child. Impenfis I. & P. Knapton Londini 1740. L. Houbraken sculps Amst 1740.”
Wentworth (1593-1641) was a powerful and controversial figure during the reign of King Charles I, serving as Lord Deputy of Ireland and later as the King’s chief advisor. His execution after a bill of attainder helped spark the English Civil War, making him a pivotal historical character.
