Description
Fine early American copper-plate line engraving of King George I in an oval cartouche with crown and regalia. The plate is signed “P. Maverick sculp. Newark N.J.” and imprinted “Albany. Published by B. D. Packard, 1816.” Maverick (1780-1831) was a leading New York/Newark engraver of the period and an important figure in early American printmaking.

Identified by Winterthur Museum as the portrait facing page 60 in Volume I of Tobias Smollett’s The History of England; issued by B. D. Packard (Albany, 1816) and also by Edward Parker (Philadelphia, 1822) in another edition
