Description

Offered here is a beautifully matched pair of Poems of Tennyson 1829-1868, Oxford University Press 1926 editions, both awarded as Appleby School prizes in 1929. Each volume features an elegant marbled leather binding-one in brown tones, one in green-trimmed in quarter cream leather with gilt spine titles, marbled page edges. Both carry the Appleby School (Oakville, Ontario) gold-embossed crest on the front board with a greyhound motif, underscoring their authentic provenance.

Inside, each has the same Appleby School printed bookplate reading “Prize for…” awarded to K. B. Alexander in 1929, linking these volumes directly to the school’s historic prize-giving tradition. The Oxford Edition was edited with an introduction by Sir Herbert Warren, President of Magdalen College, Oxford, presenting Tennyson’s poems from 1829 to 1868 with scholarly care and classic design.

This matched pair is in very good condition, with tight bindings, clean marbled boards, bright gilt edges, and intact ribbon markers. The frontispiece portrait with tissue guard is present in both, and the prize bookplates are clean and undamaged. The marbled color variation adds charm and collectible appeal-this is an excellent opportunity to own a pair of historical school prize volumes with superb Oxford bindings and direct provenance to Appleby School.

Please view all the photos to appreciate the beautiful marbled bindings, gilt edges, and bookplates. These volumes are ideal for collectors of prize bindings, Tennyson enthusiasts, or those with an interest in Appleby College history.
