Description
Original WWII patriotic cover postmarked May 18, 1943, from Camp Sibert, Alabama, featuring a satirical cachet by A.M. Roberts, Hamburg, N.Y., copyrighted 1941. The illustration shows Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia laughing as Mussolini and Hitler are kicked from Africa by a British soldier, symbolizing the Axis defeat in the North African campaign. The caption “He who laughs last” reflects Ethiopia’s liberation and the turning point for Allied forces in Africa.
This scarce design is part of the A.M. Roberts WWII series, with fewer surviving examples postmarked during the height of the war. Collectors value this piece for its vivid caricature of wartime leaders, strong historical context, and clean postmarks.
