Original WWII patriotic cover featuring Thornton C. Shaw’s poem cachet “To G.I. Joe” (1944 credit) and the scarcer captioned variant “How Could We Loose ?” as printed on the envelope. Shaw has signed the cachet at lower left in ink. Mailed from Arlington, Massachusetts in 1945 to Northampton, Mass., and franked to the correct 3¢ domestic letter rate with Prexie stamps (block of four ½¢ Franklin #803 plus 1¢ Washington #804). Shaw was a small-run cachet maker; his signed, text-centric wartime designs are not commonly seen-this headline variant is especially difficult.
