Description
Rare and historic 18th-century etching titled Henri IV et Gabrielle, designed by Charles Eisen (1720-1778), engraved by De Monchy, and printed in Paris in 1776. This beautifully detailed eau-forte (etching) captures the famous romantic relationship between King Henri IV of France and Gabrielle d’EstrĂ©es, a subject often celebrated in French art of the period.
The engraving is attributed directly on the plate: “Peint par Ch. Eisen, Dessinateur du Roi, de l’AcadĂ©mie Royale de Rouen” on the left, and “GravĂ© par De Monchy” on the right. Additionally, historical collector annotations in pencil and ink appear neatly below the plate mark, identifying the subject, artist, engraver, and Eisen’s birth and death dates (1722-1778). These period annotations, common in 19th-century collections, provide valuable provenance without affecting the artwork itself.
This is not a later reproduction – it is an original Paris printing from 1776, confirmed by the printed “Paris 1776” notation and consistent with the paper, plate marks, and engraving style of the period.
Etchings from this era, especially works tied to Charles Eisen, are highly sought after for their artistry, historical importance, and connection to royal patronage. The combination of royal subject matter, notable artists, and authentic 18th-century production makes this a significant and rare piece.
Overall condition is very good for its age. The image is clean, with strong plate impressions and typical age-related toning. Margins include minor collector annotations below the plate line, which add historical context.
A wonderful opportunity to acquire a true piece of French 18th-century art history (the engraving will be loosely rolled for shipping).
