Description
An intriguing mid-century original ink-and-wash drawing, signed “Berks” at lower right and attributed to noted American artist and sculptor Robert S. Berks (1922-2011).
The composition depicts a densely populated Middle Eastern architectural scene dominated by a monumental stone gateway, rendered with energetic pen work, warm brown wash and rapidly drawn figures. The gestural handling, overlapping lines and sculptural treatment of form compare favorably with documented works on paper by Berks.
Especially compelling is the handwritten notation beneath the signature, which appears to reference Arthur Koestler’s novel “Thieves in the Night.” Koestler’s 1946 novel is set against the political and social background of British Mandate Palestine, giving the scene a potentially significant literary and historical context.
The reverse retains an old handwritten presentation inscription referring to “A. Koestler” and apparently dated 11/21/51. This inscription adds an additional period connection between the artwork and Koestler. The identity of the person signing the reverse inscription has not been established.
Key features:
* Original hand-rendered ink and brown wash/mixed-media work on paper
* Boldly signed “Berks” at lower right
* Attributed to Robert S. Berks (1922-2011)
* Apparent “Thieves in the Night” / Arthur Koestler inscription on the front
* Reverse presentation inscription also references “A. Koestler”
* Reverse appears dated November 21, 1951
* Strong mid-century narrative composition with architecture and numerous figures
* Acquired on Long Island, where Robert Berks maintained his longtime studio in Orient, New York
* Vintage matted and wood-framed presentation
* Approximately 13 x 14 1/2 inches overall framed, with the visible artwork approximately 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches
The work is offered as attributed to Robert S. Berks based upon the visible “Berks” signature, stylistic similarities to documented Berks works on paper, period compatibility and Long Island provenance. The attribution has not been independently authenticated.
There is age-appropriate toning to the paper and mat, along with normal vintage wear to the frame. The artwork remains highly presentable and the warm toning complements the historic character of the piece.
An unusual opportunity for collectors of Robert Berks, American works on paper, mid-century art, Arthur Koestler material, Judaica and historical literary artwork.
