Description

Original signed Harriet Carotenuto bird artwork depicting a male American kestrel, also historically known as a sparrow hawk. The bird is beautifully rendered perched on a branch, with rich blue-gray wing color, rusty red back and tail, spotted breast, and strong facial markings. The piece is presented under glass with an oval mat and a two-tone frame.

The artwork is signed H. Carotenuto beneath the branch. The reverse retains an artist label identifying Harriet Carotenuto, artist and teacher, as well as a presentation label reading: “Presented in recognition of your service Friends of Hempstead Plains.” That adds a strong Long Island conservation connection to the piece.

Harriet Carotenuto is documented by Brooklyn Botanic Garden as an artist, teacher, and lecturer whose work has been exhibited in juried shows and museums, with botanical art credentials including a Royal Horticultural Society silver medal. Friends of Hempstead Plains also identifies her as the illustrator of Violet Visits the Hempstead Plains, and the organization works to preserve the rare Hempstead Plains prairie ecosystem on Long Island.
