Description
Beautiful framed Japanese woodblock print after the documented 1844 Edo-period design by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, known as “Takeout Sushi Suggesting Ataka” from the series Women in Benkei-checked Fabrics. This highly collectible image combines Kuniyoshi’s bold figure work with a fascinating Edo food-history subject: a fashionable woman in a dramatic Benkei-check kimono carrying sushi, while a child reaches upward toward the food.
This is a scarce and desirable Kuniyoshi subject because it connects several collecting categories at once: ukiyo-e, Edo-period fashion, theater allusion, Japanese food history, and early sushi culture. The print references the celebrated Ataka/Matsugazushi sushi tradition, making it especially appealing beyond standard Japanese print collecting.
